| During my first two weeks as a DNN newbee, I have purchased a number of modules through Snowcovered and other sources. Some are really great, while others are ... substandard. And it has been my experience thats its difficult to determine up front if a module is of high quality or not.
How do you guys (anybody?) determine if a module is good or bad before buying it?
What module would you recommend for document-downloads if I am not satisfied with the core document module (and dont suggest the repository module instead, its feature rich but horrible user-hostile for ordinary people)?
What module would you recommend for news lists if I am not satisfied with the core announcement module? (I am missing simple features like: "Latest entry on front page", icons for categories, and an archive where old/expired announcements are available).
What module would you recommend for allowing users to upload and share files, as an alternative to the core module? (Must have a more userfriendly interface, so even my mom can upload and share a word document on the site. And yes, I will make her try, just to see how it goes ...)
What other modules have you generally used to enhance your DNN site? (appart from PageBlaster - a MUST have for any portal!)

| Well I can say from experience that you have just taken the first step in making sure that your future purchases are ones that you are going to like a lot more than your previous ones. Finding out from people who have "been there and done that" goes a long way in the world of DNN. By and large, the top sellers on Snowcovered are pretty good, especially if they have maintained those spots for a number of weeks. You won't find all the best modules there though, because as the market has matured, the better vendors have started selling from their own sites. A new player on the scene called FlatBurger plans to adress your specific concerns head on, and they have already done a good job proving they are up to the task. Unfortunately you missed the Accelerant Program where a $1000 of modules was offered free for one year so you could try before you by. But there is more to come from the My FlatBurger where module developers will have access to powerful licensing, and website creators/end users will have the opportunity to find trial licenses of modules. That being said, I can personally recommend some modules for the tasks you described: If you don't already have this one (and who doesn't?), get Will Morgenweck's ActiveForums module from ActiveModules. This package could single handedly handle all the tasks that you asked about. If you want a specific Articles/News module then you can't go wrong with getting a subscription to Scott McCulloch's site. Actually, it doesn't matter if you want anything specific. The subscription has so much value that anyone would be crazy not to take advantage of it. You don't have to take my word for it though, check out this thread. For a full fledged Documents module check out Peter Donker of Bring2Mind's Document Exchange. It's a little pricey, but if you want to manage documents there isn't a better module in my opinion. | | | |

| Great answer, just was I was hoping for.
As it happens, I actually managed to get the ActiveForums module through the FlatBurger accelerant program. I got the oppertunity to sign up at FlatBurger when I signed up for an account at SkinCovered (a great site for skins and skin design).
I have to agree with you: ActiveForum is a great Forum module. And I will certainly renew/buy it when my 1 year FlatBurger subsribtion to it runs out.
The document module you suggested is probably a little too pricey for a non-profit site, but I will consider it anyway. I allready spent 5 times that amount on Google ads anyway ...
Do you have any experience with a company called Onyaktech? I am considering a 1 year subscription to all their PA modules, since I am interested in 3 modules that are more expensive than the 1 year (99$) subscription anyway. Any thoughts? | | brgds

| Cool, I'm glad you were able to take advantage of the FlatBurger deal. And also happy to know you are a customer of Skincovered. As far as OnyakTech's modules I have had some success, but I don't have enough experience with most of them to give a decent review. What modules are you interested in there? | | | |

| I am not a customer at SkinCovered yet since my fokus is not on designing skins myself but rather purchasing finished solutions. So far I am just a registered user, so that I can browse the site and perhaps be tempted to buy a subscription in the future ...
I have been looking at many modules from fifferent sources, and just bumped into Onyaktech eralier tonight. They seem to have quite a collection, and my primary interest is with the following 3 modules:
H20 - A module for making homebrew custom forms and data-entry "applications"
SigmaPro - A module with a large number of business-like functionality such as CRM, HelpDesk, etc.
SigmaLive - an AJAX module tjat enables 1-1 live chat between registered users of the portal
Also a buch of smaller modules such as EmailIT (allows users to mail a page to others) and Peeping DNN (shows users browsing any page as well as their visiting path).
My only concern is ... with that many modules, do they really manage to keep them all updated and working for the latest DNN versions? And how many of their features are now obsolete and replaced by standard functionality in the core modules? Good questions which can't be answered without actually becomming a customer ...

Also, they seem to do the same annoying thing that some others do: Sell their products cheaper on their homepage than the price they announce on Snowcovered so I cant keep all my purchases in a central account ...

| Hi Jesper.. did you know that I'm Danish!! Dual nationality years ago - Lived there for a while too.. In fact, we had frikadellas for tea last week.. :-D YUM... And my daughter her name is Pia.. but I guess I am really Australian - in spite of not being able to speak English as a kid!! Now, here's my thoughts on modules. I've tried more modules than I care to tell the world about and the amount of time I've worked on trying to get a module to what I think, or how it was portrayed to me has been an interesting experience to say the least. Sometimes I think there is a lacking in interpretation of what 'developers' think they have written, to how the end user will interpret things. This is generally not related to 'commonly understood' modules like the forums one, which is all I could think of off the top of my head. But even the Presstopia forums which are different to the Active Modules or default forums has a different way of doing things - based I would think on how a 'good forum' should be developed from another developers perspective. Take into consideration the different articles modules around apart from Ventrian (I have to go check my little list before posting here) and I find the 'logic' used by different developers is very interesting indeed. But does this make a module good or bad? Or is interpretation of what's good relate to how it installs?? I'll be honest with you - I've purchased the Onyak subscription and found there is value there - but very confusing.. and the skinswitcher which is what I ended up paying for a whole subscription just to get - I couldn't get working - it came up with errors all the time. I tried a few other modules and had no luck but then moved on to other solutions without really complaining since to be honest, I've read good reports and his modules have successfully ben 'reviewed' by the module reviews program so I'm assuming that perhaps it's my setting somewhere that's causing the error. I'm going to give them a try again soon - since I'm going to relaunch a site I started back in 2005 - ModuleReviews - and it was going great until I found that particular module didn't allow developers to mangage their own listing.. it gave them access to all.. That site will be relaunched in the near future but for now here is a good place to voice some opinions on modules. I can say that I've worked extensively with the ventrian articles module - in fact I've worked with a company in deploying their intranet with 4 websites using less than 40 pages for the whole portal which manages the 4 separate website - and it's running the articles module instead of the html module and it's become one of the most efficient portals I've seen - and I'm going to be flying over to train their staff on utilising DNN more efficiently and I'm keen to see how it pans out in 12 months time since it hooks into a 'document server'. I think sometimes people should spend more time learning what the standard modules do - and not fall into the trap of installing and then going shopping. To be honest, I don't use alot of modules. I don't even install all of them - and I don't tell my clients about them either. I only put on what they need at the time and use the 'premium modules' setting under the Admin/settings area and hide most modules from clients to eliminate questions and support and also if I want to upgrade a site, or export the templates alot of the modules don't either export or have to be redone anyway. So, back to Onyak - I think he's got some very good modules - I don't think they explained as well as they could be in spite of having lots of documentation, and they could have better formatting with CSS to integrate more attractively - but overall, he's been a consistent developer, and supports his products well - which is great so I will try and have a go at his modules I couldn't get working on a 4.4.1 build and see if it wasn't just unlucky that I couldn't get them working and then I'll report back here.. how's that for food for thought. | Nina, "tusind tak!"
Great information, and I'll be looking forewards to your next feedback.
I have in fact been looking at the core modules. Being an IT professional, I started with a local installation, and all core modules. I then tested each an every one of them, all documentation I could find (some modules are better documentet than others), and surfed the official DNN forums. I might have missed something, but all-in-all I think a have a decent picture of the current functionality of the core modules.
You are right about the shopping-tendency though. It is extremely tempting to go shopping for a "Bulk user import module" for 29$ instead of reading up on DNN architecture and ways of solving the task. On the other hand, my wage is a lot higher than that for just a single hours work - so how much time can I really afford to use on tasks that other people have allready solved before me, and made available to the public for a relatively small amount? Its a difficult act of balance...
And btw thanks for the skins, tips and tricks from "SkinCovered", "eXtra Dimensions Design Group", "Ninas Free Skins" and all the sites where you contribute in the forums.

| I need a module recommendation for an alternative to the Announcement module. The basic module lacks the following functionality which I would want the replacement module to have:
1.) Method of posting top 1, 2 or 3 (recent) announcement on the front page of the site. The actual method of achieving this is not relevant - could be an add-on service module, a special setup of the same module reading the to the existing, or whatever suits the developer.
2.) Ability to show all current announcement on a "Current Announcements" page.
3.) Ability to show all expired announcements on an "Archived Announcements" page.
4.) Perma-link to an announcement, so I can link to it from both my own pages and external pages.
(In addition I still need the functions in the core module, such as heading, date, expiredate, RSS syndication, etc.)
I am quite amused that this simple setup is not possible with the core module. I would have though it was a very common way of using announcements...
A commercial module is acceptable as long as the price is reasonable. Anyone looking for a donation not exceeding the price of a typical commercial module is also welcome to make a modded version of the core module and tell me how to donate.
Thanks for any input.
:)

| Hmm, no that doesn't seem like unreasonable requests to me. I wish I weren't so busy with other stuff. Did you try Scott McCulloch's article module?
I'll see if I can get some developers looking at this. | | | |

| While we are at it ... how about a recommendation for the statistics/logs functionality ... The quality of the Weblog/Stats page is in very sharp contrast to the general high quality of DNN ...
Getting anything usefull out of the current default Log section is a pain. Any 5-year-old free module for the competing PHP based open source CMS platforms beats DNNs default functionality.
And while using Google Analytics is a possible solution, it seems sad that I have to use an external provider for something as simple as visitor stats.

| My recommendation for Web Stats is that you don't try to do them in DNN. Logging this information in the web application is a serious performance hit. If you have a dedicated server, then for free web stats try http://www.smartertools.com/Products/SmarterStats/Free.aspx, I use this package and it is great. Most hosting companies will also provide you with a Stats package, lots of them use SmarterStats. Or if you don't have access to your server for installing a Stats package then http://www.google.com/analytics/ is probably the best you can get. Logging your stats outside the application is a good idea in my opinion, and with Google analytics being so good and free it probably keeps a lot of developers from even trying to compete. | | | |

| Wait wait wait wait ... ??? Are you telling me that DNN is not using the native IIS logfile? Does it actually save pagehit information in the database???
Thanks for the tip with "smarter tools". I'll check it out. I do have access to a legal and valid license of WebTrends, so that is also a possible solution for me.
I dont like the idea of depending my pagestats on an external provider. First of all it generates needless outbound traffic, and sometimes pages will "hang" if the Google server takes too long to respond. Also, if I ever get into a disagreement with my external provider (Google or other) I might be in a position where I could loose access to all my valuable webstat information. I want to OWN my own webserver log. And I want it stored locally on my webserver... as a matter of principle.
How about commercial modules that actually fit into DNN? I cant believe there are no good solutions for this - a CMS that boasts of having 300.000+ sites worldwide should have better statistical facilities than "hey, output all referrals in a long list with each and every hit as a string, as centeret text"...
;-)

| John,
Do you have any experience with a module called "XP Idea SEO Dynamic Keyword Module" which is advertised as an "add-on" to PageBlaster?
(see: http://www.snowcovered.com/Snowcovered2/Default.aspx?tabid=242&r=3f3f44b3d3&r=3f3f44b3d3&PackageID=6412 )
I am considering buying it, because it would optimize my site with a minimum of work. On the other hand I dont want to spend 40 USD on something that I basically know nothing about other than the sales-speech from Snowcovered...

| Yes, I have some expierience with it from helping another customer that uses it.
It's works very well for what it does. I prefer to do SEO manually, but if you are lookig for a quick way to get the keywords optimized on many pages then it will certainly do the job.
One place it is very useful for is on pages that get dynamically created from community input, like these forums or in the case of the other customer he has a store where vendors resell their products.

And we won't be seeing anything similar as a core functionality in PageBlaster anytime soon? ;-)

We feel much the same way with substandard modules from snow, we have put a lot of effort into our module to ensure that it works as advertised. Hope this is of assistance to people.
