Hi John

As you are aware I have recently transfered hosting. The DNS is fully transferred I am experiencing an error on one of my sites which I thought was perhaps due to the prolonged DNS transfer causing URL confusion.   The problem I am having is the constrant inability to view admin or host pages or to view page settings etc.,

I am seeing this error message:

A critical error has occurred.
Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

=====================================

An error has occurred.
DotNetNuke.Services.Exceptions.PageLoadException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. ---> System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. at DotNetNuke.Framework.DefaultPage.Page_Init(Object sender, EventArgs e) at System.Web.UI.Control.OnInit(EventArgs e) at System.Web.UI.Page.OnInit(EventArgs e) at DotNetNuke.Framework.PageBase.OnInit(EventArgs e) at System.Web.UI.Control.InitRecursive(Control namingContainer) at System.Web.UI.Page.ProcessRequestMain(Boolean includeStagesBeforeAsyncPoint, Boolean includeStagesAfterAsyncPoint) --- End of inner exception stack trace ---

I have been looking for a solution in many places but so far a resolve has not been found.

I am now guessing that the error may be due to missing data in the database. I was wondering if the backup database was restored over itself it might solve the problem.  Or alternatevely if I upgraded to 4.5.1 it may over write the error and restore vital DNN missing DB data. Do you think either of my suggestions could be the answer or am I completely off the mark?

Thanks

Lynn

Hi Lynn,
Yes, it's possible that it could be missing Data in the DB. Do you have a backup database that may have not been corrupted?

Upgrading probably will not help, because an upgrade usually only add new features or data, it doesn't go back and put things there that should already be there.

I think the best thing would be to get a debug version on there so we can see exactly what is missing. If you let me know the version I could create a debug DLL and then we can go from there.

Hi John

Thanks for the reply. The DNN version is 4.4.1 I was thinking of upgrading to 4.5.1, to restore lost files, but I will put that on hold.

The only backup database I have is the database backup supplied from my previous hosting company (currently sitting in my site root). I understand that this is the database restored onto my new hosting server, obviously unaware that it has been damaged by the previous server.

Wow what a lucky escape I had, if I had not left when I did who knows what damage may have occured.

My previous hosting company did not create a fuss when I cancelled as I had expected, they must have known.

Thanks again for your help.

Regards

Lynn

Thanks for solving this serious problem John.

The Problem/Solution:

My DNN_Blue skin had mysteriously dissapeared, (pockets/bags will be searched before leaving) I was using this skin as my default admin skin. Restore DNN blue and problem solved.

Thanks

Lynn
