John-

We are over the 999 days in our sitelog and loosing data. I was looking on the dnn forum and found this post that you had replied to: Site Log History (-1)http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/ForumsDotNetNuke/tabid/795/forumid/108/threadid/64482/scope/posts/Default.aspx. I am wondering if that post is correct, if you change your site log history to -1 that it will keep it in the database forever? If this is correct, do you just need to change it to -1 in two places (the admin site settings and the host site settings)? Thank you so much for your help!

Yes, setting the history to -1 will keep the SiteLog from being purged and also allow it to continue logging indefinately.

You only need to set it on the portal's site settings page, but you need to be logged in as host to do it.

Setting it under Host settings will use that settings for any new portals that are created.

All that being said, I would recommend against using the SiteLog if you care about performance. The reports are not that great and the logging has to lookup the User and the portal on every request to a page. It is much better to have your stats monitored using the IIS logging, or with Google Analytics.

We will change the site settings history to -1. Someone also replied to my post on dnn saying to:

In host > scheduled tasks there is a task that is performing the cleanup. Disable it and you're fine.

Is this something we also need to do? Should we do this if we set the history to -1? Thank you so much for your help!

Yes, you can turn off that task in the scheduler if you don't want any purging to be done. Setting to -1 will keep the task from running the purge and also make your sitelogs grow indefinitely, but also disabling the purge task will save it from having to call that process only to find out that there is nothing to do.
