I'm in the process of upgrading to DotNetNuke 4.5.3, it's gonna be my first upgrade, so I'm pretty scared of messing things up lol. I checked the instructions in this forum and they seem great, but when you say "Backup your current installation by making a copy of your DotNetNuke folder and a backup of your current Database" I really don't know where to start. The steps after that seem pretty straight forward, but I can't get started without backing up my files to a localhost computer, can anyone give me some directions on how to backup my current installation and make a backup of my current database? Thanks!!

Are you doing this on a remote host? If so you may need to get your host to backup your database. To backup your folder, just FTP all the files down to your local machine, or you may be able to get your host to zip up all your files into one package for backup.

Thanks! I'm having a bit of trouble with step 4: "Step #4: Insure that your connection strings are pointing to the actual database that you want to upgrade." Umm, can you explain this step to me please? I'm upgrading a live site.

That will be the connection string for your live site. If you are using the new web.config then you will need to make sure you copy over those connections strings from your old web.config

I'm getting this error message after my installation: ERROR: Could not connect to database specified in connectionString for SqlDataProvider I copied my old connection strings from the old web.config to the new release.config then renamed it to web.config, that was what I'm supposed to do right? Maybe I made a simple error while trying to do that.

That is correct. Remember that there is two places for your connection strings and you may have to remove comments. Look closely at your old when when comparing to the new to make sure.
