Hi I've been looking for away to disable the alert posting of instance startup / shutdown on a production site. Is this possible? Would be great if there was a config on/off for this but can't seem to find it. Does one exist?

If you login as host and go to the Event Viewer there is an Action Item option to Edit Log Settings. From that page you can edit the Log Types and also drill configure notification settings.
