I've played around with the portal template feature and the copy page feature when creating a new page from an existing page, but not sure of the best practice when reverse engineering this and creating a new page from scratch, then moving the contents over to an existing page.

I absolutely hate my home page now and want to totally redesign it.  I would simply use the redirect feature in the site setup menu, but not sure if this slows it down a bit or is SEO unfriendly using a redirect or then recognizes the new page that I would redirect to as www.mydomain.com, et al....so would rather create a hidden page, complete the redesign, then move it over. The only alternative I thought of is to just hide all the modules to non-admin folk and do the redesign on the existing page, then simply delete the current content and unhide the new content.

Thoughts?

You can assign a different page as your default (home) page in Admin > Site Settings
