I've been going into the event viewer and deleting all events I don't want to save and leaving only the 'login success' entries, as I would like to save the IP address in the event I need to babysit the forums from time to time...had some spam fill the forums, so I use the entries with the filter to keep the riff-raff out. :)

Are these entries stored in the database somewhere would I could run a query and export them to, say, Excel or even a plain txt file? As I get more and more entries in the event viewer, it's becoming a pain in the arse to toggle everything except the login success entries to save them. If I clear all, however, I suspect the IPs would also be removed from the database?  So if such a query is possible, I would have to export the data BEFORE cleaning the events?

Perhaps there's a more intuitive way to clean house, but this is how I have been doing it since I started...anyone have a better method? :)

Another place IP addresses are stored in the core is in the SiteLog, but ActiveForums stores them with each post. Maybe that is something that the core forums do also.

Thanks, John. Yea, the detailed site log is just what the doctor ordered.  I'll now just clear all the events in the event viewer after a cursory glance for problems.

This begs another question, though...when truncated the transaction log, is it actually clearing the detailed site log? I could see this site log getting exorbitantly large in a hurry.  Is there a best practice to keep it manageable, if not connected to the transaction log (or are the one in the same?)?

The SiteLog is a seperate table and there is a scheduled task that purges it depending on how long you have the site log set to retain information.
