Hello, I have a CSS table-less skin question.

I am currently using a table based skin which I purchased from snowcovered

and I was thinking about changing to a Pure CSS skin from snowcovered

http://www.snowcovered.com/snowcovered2/Default.aspx?tabid=242&r=3f3f44b3d3&PackageID=8684

Do you guys have any advice on using PURE CSS skins? The reason for this is that I would like to increase load time.

When my site loads I can actually see the tables being created one by one, and its slowing things down by a couple of secs.

Have you guys used or do you recommend any other pure CSS skins?

Thanks

Hi,
Using a CSS based skin is a great idea for decreasing the load time in the browser.

I always recommend using just one table to hold the Panes in the skin for layout because you never know what a module might do to a totally fluid layout.

My skin on the home page here at http://www.Snapsis.com has been heavily optimized using CSS and is very fast.

Another thing you should consider is a good CSS based navigation though, as the default DNN navigation system relies on tables and XML parsing which is very slow compared to a good CSS menu.

Hi John.

Yes , your site is very fast. I found an older post in one of the asp.net forums, that your site had the fastest loading times of all.
I'm sure its the combination of CSS and your Page Blaster caching together.

I have a question about page blaster.

I have a site which has dynamic content on the home page. I always display a most recent list in a datagrid.
How would your page blaster affect that. How long does it cache the page's contents for?
Currently, I am caching the dataset returned by the database for 1 min only (for the most recent list).

My site has grown somewhat, and I am not happy with DNN's load time.
I have tweaked some settings in IIS's application pool and it has helped alot, but its still twice as slow as a pure ASP.net equivalent site that I have (3 sec load time versus less than 1 second load time).

Thanks John

The free PageBlaster can be set to globally cache all pages for any amount of time that you want. The less traffic you have, the longer you should cache it if you want it to stay fast for more users though.
The PageBlaster DNN Module allows you to override the global setting and set each individual page for different times if you like.

Personally, I would refrain from having content on the home page that needs to be updated more often than once a day. This will allow you to keep a nice fast home page to allow the visitor to be "drawn into" your site for more detailed and up to date info.

Yes, good advice. Ill have to consider reworking the dynamic layout of the home page.

Thanks for the input John. Ill go ahead and purchase the Pageblaster DNN module.
