The latest version of DNN has a new search feature that allows you to have google adsense.
Several people have complained of this new feature messing up their skins.

You can turn it off by adding a couple attributes to your search skinObject

< dnn:SEARCH runat="server" id="dnnSEARCH" showWeb="False"showSite="False" />

This feature also has the ability to let you participate in revenue sharing from Google ads.
But to do so you will need to change the default client id to your own.

You can do that by changing the language resource file at admin/skins/App_LocalResources/Search.ascx.resx
Look for the Url key that looks like this:

<dataname="URL.Text"><value>http://www.google.com/custom?hl=en&client=pub-9770992166002654&sitesearch=[DOMAIN]&q=[TEXT]value>data>

Change the client=pub-9770992166002654 part to your own.

To get your own Adsense Account go to http://www.google.com/adsense

Keep in mind that you will also have to change this back again any time you upgrade, or when the language file gets over-written you will switch back to letting DotNetNuke Corporation recieve the revenue.

As an update, this "feature" was talked about extensively in the following thread.

http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Default.aspx?tabid=795&forumid=-1&scope=posts&threadid=138793

I don't know why Shaun admitted it was a mistake and then did not change it in DNN 4.5.3, but the behaviour remains the same.

Thanks for the info John. I'll need to thank Nina too as she posted on her blog which pointed me to this. Interesting and not something I would have looked for if not clued into it. I'll need to go through the rest of that code for the module we where discussing in the Benefactor's thread and see what may be tucked away in there. I'm guessing you already did because of what you found here :-)

Hi Bruce. Thanks for your post. I'm glad you you were able to find it through the DNN grapevine. :)

When I checked out the Adsense module, I found that it worked as I would have expected. It waits for you to put in an Adsense ID before it displays the ads.  I didn't dig through the code of the module though, so there still may be another surprise or three.

I did read somewhere that you would get taken to the DotNetNuke site to create your Adsense account, I think it was the last newsletter, but I didn't see where to do that.  Maybe it is the vendor area.

I personally think this whole Adsense area should have been put in front of more eyes for feedback, but oh well.

There is a sign up for adwords link on the Site Settings page that is an affiliate link. I don't mind that as a method for the project to generate a little revenue, but taking my clicks is another thing.

Oh, I see. Yes, that kind of affiliate signup is legit in my opinion too.

I'm really wondering about Google if they recently cracked down on Adsense heavy sites, but they are allowing DotNetNuke Corporation to so blatently violate the TOS.

Google will change rules based on Revenue generated. My guess is that with the number of Page views dnn.com generates a month, then the adsense revenue is pretty high. Perhaps even to the point of qualifying as a premium publisher. who knows, looks like they are going to fix it.

I've changed my search settings to use my adsense account info but it appears as if Google is not picking up the searches. When I use Google's code I am able to track the number of searches as well as the number of ad clicks.

Anyone happen to know if there is anything else I need to change besides the above?

Hi Michael,
That should be all you have to change. You say when you use Google's code you are able to track the changes, but I'm not sure what that means.

You can verify that it is your adsense code being used if you look at the url of the search results page.

Yes, I can go into my Adsense account and see the number of times someone has used the Google search on my site (with Google's code).  I would also see the revenue generated if anyone happened to click on an ad the was shown as a result of the search.

I don't see any of the information now.  The Adsense report says No Data Available.  As far as I know, I don't have to set up a channel to see generic data like the number of searches in a day.

Thanks.

When you say "With Google's code", do you mean the code they supply you with from your Adsense setup on the Google site?

My site is http://www.sgchs.us.

I checked the url like you said and it does contain my pub id but I see on record of the search being completed.
Not sure if Google is filtering out my searches or not.

Thanks.

I can't figure out why this is not working Michael. I'm going to have to try and setup my own and see if I have the same problems.

Anyone able to verify if they are getting credit for their searches? Just trying to figure out if it is just me or DNN.

Thanks.

I still haven't been able to confirm it. How are you checking specifically for your Adsense Search results? Do you create a special report in your Adsense account?
