I am sorry if this is a newbie question.... I installed the NavMenu through the module definitions page. Now that I have done that, do I have to add the HTML to the default.aspx page in order to see the new menu? What if I only want the NavMenu on a few selected pages?

The NavMenu is a SkinObject. The registration and settings code goes in your Skin. There are sample skins in the package to see how it is done.
Once you have it in your skin, you can apply the skin to only the pages where ou want to use it.

Ok, thanks for the quick reply. One more question: are you able to add pages to the NavMenu that are set to hidden? I was hoping I could add pages that are not on the main menu to the NavMenu.

No, I would have to add another option to allow the display of pages that are marked as hidden in DNN.
I have had this request once before so I'll go ahead and add that.
