My latest client contacted me because their Google rankings had plummeted from being in the top 10 to being 400+. I quickly found there were two main issues: 1. 800 - 1000 validation errors per page. This is so many errors that Google is (probably) unable to understand the page. I say probably because you can never know for sure with Google.
2. Duplicate content, each page had up to 20 nearly identical versions.
To fix the duplication, I deleted all but one of the duplicates, and used URL Master (ww.ifinity.com.au) to point all old URLs to the single version of the appropriate page.
With PageBlaster, I was able to get the validation errors down to around 30 per page. 24 hours later the home page's top 10 ranking was restored. Internal pages have not followed yet, but I guess that Google has not done a deeper spider of the site yet.
