Hi,

i have just started using the pageblaster module. i am not a programmer. i merely purchased the module and had my host install it for me - ready to use. i've read through the user docs and am still not sure of what to do. all i will be using this module for is to create user friendly urls. i have created two test pages on my domain to play around with the module and figure out how it works before implementing on the real pages. this is what i've done so far.

two pages created - home and contact us. on the home page, i added an instance of the pageblaster module and edited as follows:

1. under page setup - virtual path, i entered a new virtual path - home.aspx
2. under replacements - portal rule, under the rule name Url - Home, under search for:, i added the path Home/tabid/173/Default.aspx. under replace with: i added home.aspx.

so now when i click on the home page link in the nav bar, i get directed to the page www.mydomainname.co.uk/home.aspx. so this has worked.

however, on the contact us page, i created a text link to the home page, and when i click on it, i get directed to the old url - http://www.mydomainame.co.uk/Home/tabid/173/Default.aspx

how do i resolve this issue? please help.

Hi,
Thanks for the detailed explaination. From what you have done everything should be working correctly. Maybe take a close look at the new link you put on the contact us page to make sure that is formed correctly. Other than that maybe restarting the application will help (under Host > Host Settings). You shouldn't have to restart, but maybe there is some other caching happening somewhere.

hi john,

thanks for your response.

I can tell you how i created the link just so you can verify it’s been created properly. In the text editor i clicked on the link image. When the window pops up, i clicked on ‘browse server’, then Page (A Page on your site), then selected the home page. Then and there, can i see the url of the page and i can see it’s the old url. I know i can physically type in the url myself and link to the ‘new user friendly url’, but that defeats the purpose of the having the option to link to a selected page in the site.

After changing content on your site you may need to clear the PageBlaster cache. You can do this by pressing CTRL+F5 in Internet Explorer or SHIFT+F5 in FireFox. If the replacement rule is working correctly it should replace any output it finds that matches, and if it is a Portal Rule it should work on every page. You shouldn't have to change the link manually.

Hi John,

I've tried that and still no luck. it is definitely a portal rule. would it be possible for you to have a look if i gave you login details?

Ok, now I understand what the problem is.  When using the Html Editor to insert a link to your site it is forming the Url differently.  You could create another portal Rule to transform those Urls. If you don't create another rule for replacing those types of links then I advise against using the "Page on your site"  option for creating links.

The reason that option is not good is because it makes the link go through LinkClick and then does a 302 redirect.  That is not only bad for performance, but it is also bad for SEO.

Hi John,

Many thanks for looking at the site and thanks for your suggestions. in your opinion, what would be the best solution for SEO purposes:

1. create another portal rule, or

2. not use the 'page on your site' option?

If you create another portal rule it will take care of the SEO problem since it will be a direct link to the correct page. But that will be at the slight cost of some performance for having to process that new rule.

If you create the links manually then you won't have to process another rule to get the good link but that is at the cost of convenience. So you have to balance the convenience with the performance cost for that convenience. A few rules isn't bad on performance, but maybe you'll want other rules.
